step 1: research & writing Sept. 29 - Oct. 5
We will start this project with a writing segment wherein each student will be responsible for researching their chosen topic. You can choose from the topics below:
Sustainability (local growth, communities)
Teen Issues (drug use, pregnancy)
Gang related issues
Endangered species
Alternative energy sources
Water Conservation
Debt (national) economy
International Issues & Politics
War
If you are unsure of your topic, please ask me about it before you start researching.
Once you have chosen your topic, begin by doing the following:
a. Research the topic
b. Type up your paper. Include in your paper the following points:
Why did you choose this topic?
What can be done?
What are the current facts and statistics about this situation?
What is being done?
What part do you play?
Overall, you are writing about a situation (locally or internationally) that is recognized as an issue. Make sure your voice is heard throughout this... and be SURE to site any facts that you discovered in your research. Not only should your voice be heard, but it should be persuasive. This will be graded on based on the six traits of writing that you have heard of already in your English Class:
1. Ideas - Topic, details, and information.
2. Organization - Order, transitions, introductions, and conclusion
3. VOICE - Personality behind the writing; focus on the audience
4. Word Choice - Specific, vivid, natural word choice
5. Sentence Fluency - A variation in sentence structure that flows
6. Conventions - Grammar, punctuation, usage, and spelling
Make sure that you have your name and period included at the top of your essay. You will be using Microsoft Word to type up your essay, and the length of your essay must be EXACTLY ONE PAGE DOUBLE SPACED.
